AMA Chartered Club #563
STARS History by Gary Fitch

The Southern Tier Aero Radio Society "STARS", incorporated in the State of New York, is one of the oldest Model Aviation Clubs in the United States, having been founded in the 1930's, 2 years before the beginning of the national organization called The Academy of Model Aeronautics.  STARS was one of the instrumental clubs in the development of Giant Scale Radio Controlled Aircraft (1/5 and 1/4 scale size of real full size aircraft) in the 1970's.

Our organization is comprised of over 50 members, from all over the region, and we are dedicated to the pursuit of designing, building, and flying Radio Controlled Airplanes.  The STARS main function is to provide a place where radio controlled flying can be safely promoted and we follow all of the safety guidelines put forth by our national organization "AMA".  STARS future was guaranteed with the purchase of land for our current flying field 15 years ago, located of West Shore Rd., near State Route 446.  Since then our organization has invested over $50,000 developing our flying field with a 1,050 runway, constructing a storage building with meeting area, a pilot shelter, drilling a water well and putting in electricity on site, and having a bathroom installed.  A fence was installed for spectator safety, and a large tractor was purchased from the State of NY for mowing the grass.  STARS has a newcomer training program to teach our new members the skills required to successfully fly a radio controlled airplane.

STARS sponsors or participates in several events each year . We have a Float in the Cuba Dairy week parade in June.  Every year in July we host the largest Radio Controlled Model Aircraft Scale Rally in New York State at the Olean Airport.  The airport is closed to full-scale aircraft activity and over 100 pilots from many States and Canada come to fly at this premier event.  This year we will be celebrating our 28th annual Scale July 9th & 10th, 2005 and the public is encouraged to attend.  The end of August we hold an Open House for everyone to come to our field, enjoy skilled flying, try their hand at flying, and enjoy the food and drink provided by our club.  During the winter we fly electric powered foam airplanes in the Cuba Middle School Gym on Sunday afternoons.
